A Clean Computer Registry Can Make All The Difference

A computer registry is part of the Window's operating system and if you don't have extensive experience with computers, you may not know quite what it is. The computer registry was initially introduced as part of Windows 3. If you want to open your computer registry, all you have to do is go to the RUN command line and then type the word “regedit”.

Let's simplify this

Clean Computer Registry

Your registry is an big ole batch of files containing information about almost everything that happens on your computer. Things like a visit to a Web site or a program installation are all going to be in your registry.

Only computers running Windows operating systems have registries. Rumor had it that Windows 7 will not have a registry. It turns out that it will.

After hundreds of thousands of entries, a computer's performance may start to suffer. The registry can be cleaned up, though not completely and you may get better performance and decreased boot time. This is a very sensitive area of your computer, so if you're happy with how your computer is running, please don't mess around with it.

I have never used a registry cleaner, but have heard great things about the program on this page. Also, check out sites like ZDNet, CNET, or PC World for cleaners.

But, before you do anything:

  • create a backup copy of the registry
  • save any important data to an external hard drive
  • make sure you close all other open programs

Most of these cleaner programs are intuitive, but makesure you approve deletions manually. Digging in deeper and getting rid of borderline entries could affect a program's ability to function, like getting rid of something that is shared by more than one program. You may damage your installation of Windows, so when in doubt just let the entry stay.

Most experts say it's not necessary to clean a registry more than once a month.
