Free Norton Antivirus Download...yes, It's Free To Download, But Not Free To Keep.

Let's start this of on the right track: Norton AntiVirus 2010 is free to download and has a 30 day free trial. After the the trial is up, you will have to pay $35 for the basic version and $75 for the Norton 360 version, which has many more features. Okay? Okay.

Now, a little bit about antivirus software.

You have heard of it, people say you need it, so what is it?

AntiVirus software is used to prevent and detect malware. What is malware? Malware is the general term for some common terms you are quite aware of: Trojan horses, worms, and any other computer virus someone told you about.

What's the down fall?
Well, as cool as it is to get rid of and prevent all that junk, some antivirus software can degrade the performance of your computer. You also run th risk of it not detecting things it should or get rid of something it shouldn't have. Also, you have to be careful and check some of these companies. It me seem like you only pay once only to find you get a referal fee every year. It may be a good deal if the system works for you, just be aware of it.

How does it work?
Well, something called Signature based detection is the most common method. It basically compares the contents of a file with a list of virus signatures.

The process
1. The software run a virus scan on a schedule or you do it manually
2. If some type of malware is located, the bad file is usually placed into a something called a quarantine. This will kill its chance to mess up your system.
3. You delete it

The Norton AntiVirus is just one of many out there. Do your research, just like you are now, and if you use something that seems to have a pretty web presence, you will most likely be alright.

Don't click on email attachments that are executable files even if they look as if sent from known persons. I have done this and it is a total mess. Not sure why, but it was not good

Don't forget to:
1. Install an anti-spy ware program to enlarge the protection.
2. Never install a browser help or search bar accepting the times it comes from a reliable source.
3. Use a different credit card for online shopping.

I can tell you right now, never click yes when your browser asks you if you want to install or open some content coming from an organization you don't know or don't trust.

If the virus does not inflict damage, how can it still cause problems by taking up space and memory, lowering the performances of the computer? This does not make sense to me
